Why this petition matters

Started by Sage Short

South Carolina is represented in National Statuary Hall by portraits of two white men, John C. Calhoun and Wade Hampton III––both enslavers and ardent defenders of slavery in the United States.

These statues were donated by the state of South Carolina (voted on by the legislature and paid for with public (state) funds) during the era of Jim Crow laws, a period of racial segregation during which Black Americans were marginalized, disenfranchised, and violently oppressed.

The Fellows of the Edwards Center for Inclusive Excellence at Coastal Carolina University do not believe these two people best represent South Carolina’s values today. If you agree, we ask you to stand with us and sign our petition to rethink and replace who represents us in National Statuary Hall.
