This law should be repealed because it it's being abused by people like George Zimmerman. An analysis of state data shows deaths due to self defense are up over 200 percent since the law took effect. Until 2005, it was generally considered self defense if someone tried to get into your home or invade your property, so long as you could show deadly force was the last resort.
In 2005, the “Stand your Ground” law removed the need to retreat before using force, even in public. According to state crime stats, Florida averaged 12 “justifiable homicide” deaths a year from 2000-2004. After “Stand your Ground” was passed in 2005, the number of “justifiable” deaths has almost tripled to an average of 35 a year, an increase of 283% from 2005-2010.
These statistics show that this law is doing more harm than good. Since its enactment, it has been frequently cited in cases ranging from a 2006 incident in which a man sprayed a vehicle carrying a known gang member with 14 bullets to the 2011 case of a man who was cleared under "stand your ground" after stabbing a man in the head with an ice pick during a road rage incident, according to legal and media accounts.
I strongly believe George Zimmerman knew a lot of these cases, and was determined to kill someone. He knew that if he claimed self defense he could get away with murder. This affects everyone whether you reside in Florida or not, how would you like to be on vacation, and you or a family member gets into a confrontation and are murdered on the spot, and this law protects the perpetrator?
