Why this petition matters

The Town of Davie devision of Parks and Recreation closed the Wolf Lake for water access through Covid 2020 then briefly in 2021 opened up. It’s now been just shy of a year sense closing it again. The town webpage still boasts the comfortable facilities and allowing the horses to wade in the water.

At first the claim was to “test the water”. For what? Where can we find the results. It’s common knowledge that you can get swimmers itch also known as freshwater amoebas (totally natural) as a result of entering otherwise wild water. But why can’t we allow our horses some relief from the hot summer?

Wolf Lake is a treasured destination for more than just locals. I personally have met equestrians who traveled as far as Naples and Okeechobee to allow their horses in the water. Want to swim your horse and have a great picnic? This is a great spot for that! There are picnic shelters and restrooms, Sandy shallows, clear clean water and even a few hills to go up and down! Although just a single loop trail it is in the shade of towering Australian Pines. The main reason to go to Wolf Lake is to enjoy the water on your horse. Wolf Lake is a great late-in-the season destination when the weather is too hot for serious riding but you’re not quite ready to put the saddle away from Midsummer‘s doldrums. Think what a treat this is for your horse who when you stop at the water he gets to start splashing. The few trails aren’t marked but they are easy to follow and wide trimmed. With only about an hours worth of riding here the trails are not the main attraction. Swimming and hanging out on a sultry summer day is the reason to go. The trail head is well set up, with picnic tables and lots of shade for tying out. There’s ample room for trailer parking but no paddocks and just a single water trough for drinking.

Wolf Lake is a former rock pit and the sides are quite steep the only safe place to enter the water is from the single horse beach located near the entry of the park.

The Town of Davie has expressed concern for safety.   A posted sign has been enough for decades. Why not a sign? like before or “no running” like at treetops, “Limit 6 horses in the water” not that this was ever a real issue. Most riders respect each other enough to share the very limited beach.

Wolf Lake is missed by all!

we want it back.
