Reopen the Pallion Shipyard

Reopen the Pallion Shipyard
Why this petition matters

We call upon Sunderland City Council to review the Councils strategy for the marine engineering economy based upon the success that is been witnessed on Teesside, Tyneside and Blyth with the creation of thousands of well paid jobs based on the booming North Sea economy centred around the new windfarms.
We would like the Council to note the importance of the regeneration of Riverside on the Wear for marine engineering centred on the £200M Pallion Shipyard in Sunderland, that can play a critical role in the delivery of the social, economic and environmental regeneration objectives set out in Sunderland’s City Plan.
The regeneration of the riverside in Palllion focused on the Yard will support the Councils objective of the creation of a mixed economy base, vibrant, healthy, and dynamic city, with more better paid skilled jobs and apprenticeships, a greater choice of employment, and a sustainable low carbon economy.
We therefore call upon Sunderland City Council to use of the Council’s Compulsory Purchase Order (“CPO”) powers pursuant to Section 226(1) of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (“the 1990 Act”) to facilitate the development of the Pallion shipyard and associated area into a Marine Engineering Centre of Excellence creating up to 3K jobs within 5 years within the NorthEast and Sunderland.
