LVLHS FIGHT BACK! started this petition

At the start of the schoolyear (August 30th, 2021), every single restroom in LVLHS was open. Getting to the restroom, from the restroom, and in time for class wasn't an issue for most students.

In each floor there are 4 men's and 4 women's restrooms, making up a total of 8 men's and 8 women's restrooms in the building. All spaced on completely different sides of the building.

This wouldn't have been an issue if it wasn't for the fact that as the end of the year approached, LVLHS administration began to lock up restrooms on an individual basis, which quickly became a problem when looking for the nearest option in emergency situations.

Eventually, administration locked up every single men's restroom on the second floor, while the men's restrooms on the first floor reopened very slowly. . .

This means that World Language, Infinity, SOJO, and MAS students alike are forced to go downstairs to use a men's restroom -and as a result- have suffered in various ways

In a school of 1200+ students, providing only 4 men's restrooms is a problem. . . do we even have to point that out?

Restrooms are often packed, forcing students to wait for urinals and stalls to become available, many of which are already in poor condition (stalls don't have locks, urinals flood when flushed, bathrooms don't have paper, etc). In the case of women’s restrooms, basic necessities like pads and tampons (which were once provided) are now unavailable.

The fact that passing periods last only 5 minutes doesn't help, "zero-tolerance" policies will punish students who enter class a few seconds after the bell rings with automatic detentions.

Naturally, students became concerned. . .  and when the administration of one school was asked "when are you all going to reopen the restrooms?" one assistant-principal replied, "tell your friends to stop vandalizing them."

However, we in FIGHT BACK! know that this isn't simply about vandalism. Most students don't look twice at these drawings, names, and quotes on our restroom walls.

If that was all this was about, every men's restroom in the building would be closed alongside many of the women's restrooms (which administration has the power to lock up at any moment). Truthfully, if the administration of our schools really cared about vandalism, they would team up and put in the work to wipe it all up.

The decision to lock up every single men's restroom on the second floor is once again, about policing and criminalizing students. It makes the task of rounding up students by security, deans, and other forms of hallway scouts much easier. Detentions are given out like candy, and in the case of students caught smoking in restrooms, suspensions are too.

LVLHS administration has decided that instead of providing students with the resources they need to overcome substance abuse, they're going to criminalize it. They're going to make it easier for students to get caught in the act and provide them with suspensions (which won't stop students from smoking).

In a building full of Black and brown students who are already over-policed and criminalized, policies like these are detrimental to our future (studies show that suspensions make students less likely to graduate high school, less likely enroll in college, but more likely to end up in the criminal justice system, and more likely to be homeless).

If you really care about us students, listen to us when we say. . .
