Put a two-year moratorium on recreational marijuana licenses in Reno, NV
Why this petition matters
Ask the Reno City Council to impose a two-year moratorium on the licensing of recreational marijuana businesses and events.
This is a time of rapid change and uncertainty about the legality of recreational marijuana in the US. The federal government has threatened to crack down on the marijuana industry, even as recreational marijuana has just become legal in Nevada.
Nevada no longer criminalizes marijuana use, but Reno still needs to seriously examine how we DO want to handle marijuana.
- Should we allow retail stores and social clubs that will advertise and promote marijuana use?
- How do we protect bystanders from secondhand smoke and vapor?
- How will we address the public health problems that result from increased marijuana use?
Local government officials are already making plans to license retail stores and create "public use zones." However, they have not gathered any data about the preferences and concerns of Reno residents.
Legalization of recreational marijuana is a massive social change, and should be rolled out slowly. Residents can already possess and use small amounts of marijuana, and that won't change. However, before Reno lets the recreational marijuana industry take root, the City Council must first take the time to find out what form of legalization residents want.
Please help us convince the Reno City Council to impose a two-year moratorium on the licensing of recreational marijuana businesses and events!
