As long as we, as a nation, continue to be honest about Columbus and the atrocities he committed, Columbus Day can never provide the unifying spirit that all holidays should.

The renaming of Columbus Day would bring greatly needed attention to the ongoing difficulties faced by Native communities, while also transforming a grim memorial into a more positive, uplifting celebration of our national diversity and the proud heritage of the indigenous peoples.
