Chris Elliott started this petition to MLK Club Rename Calhoun Street, Fort Wayne

Calhoun Street, located in downtown Fort Wayne, honors John Calhoun, the 7th Vice-President of the United States of America.  Mr. Calhoun was a slave owner.  He vigorously defended the institution of slavery as a "positive good" on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Additionally, Mr. Calhoun authored the Indian Removal Act.  This legislation forced American Indians from their land at gunpoint, resulting in thousands of deaths on the Trail of Tears.

Meanwhile, over 700 American cities have streets named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, including eight cities in Indiana.  But, not Fort Wayne.  Every American city with a population comparable to the size of Fort Wayne has a street honoring the winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize.

A statue in Calhoun's former hometown of Charleston, SC has been removed.   Lake Calhoun in Minnesota was recently renamed to honor indigenous heritage.  Calhoun's name has been eliminated from a building at his alma mater of Yale University.

Isn't it time that Fort Wayne enacted a similar change? Let's rename Calhoun Street in honor of Martin Luther King.  Sign our petition today!!
