Removing GST from fresh fruit and vegetables

Removing GST from fresh fruit and vegetables
Why this petition matters
Kia Ora,
We are a group of year 13 social studies students wanting to make a policy change surrounding GST on fresh fruit and vegetables. We aim to remove GST because we want to make essential and healthy foods more accessible for families in poverty. Instead of targeting essential foods (such as bread and dairy items) we are directing our focus towards all fresh fruit and vegetables so debate on what foods categorised as 'essential' wouldn't need specific classifications. By reducing the cost of fresh fruits and vegetables, we hope to increase accessibility to adequate health and daily necessities, leading to better health outcomes in poorer communities in New Zealand, as well as making money available for essential needs. Families should not have to eat subpar nutrient poor food when we grow healthy products here.
Our goal is create a social impact to influence lawmakers and government officials on our views we aspire to change the policy around GST.
We hope that this will help to improve the lives of families in poverty, by allowing them to have access to healthier foods.
