Remove Robert E. Lee’s name from Durant’s Early Childhood Center

The Issue

"People who are racist aren't stupid, they're ignorant. And the answer to ignorance is education.” - Jane Elliot, Activist and Educator

The Robert E. Lee Early Childhood Center was built in 1937 and is named after a general of the confederate army. General Lee sought to oppress black citizens from their right to freedom from slavery. He is not a war hero. He is a failed general with a failed ideology. He does not deserve the honor to have a place of education named after him. This is one of the first schools that the children of Durant attend and systemic racism is introduced. It is time to remove the name of the general from the school and rename the school with something more fitting for the city of Durant. We should teach the history, but there is no need to glorify someone who fought a war to allow black citizens to be kept as slaves. Do you want change so that the future generations of this town do not have to experience racism? This is only one step in the right direction and it won’t be the last.
