Remove Psychology Today’s Benefits of OCD Article
Why this petition matters
On September 9th, Psychology Today posted a horrifying article describing 5 potential benefits of having OCD https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/communication-success/202209/5-potential-benefits-obsessive-compulsive-disorder-work?amp . Mental illnesses are by definition maladaptive and impairing. There is nothing beneficial to terrorizing intrusive thoughts or driven compulsive behaviors. Moreover, OCD exploits positive qualities that already exist in people with the illness. In the absence of OCD, those positive characteristics will still exist and will likely strengthen with recovery. This article takes a stereotypical archetype of OCD and tries to reframe it into something helpful. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is destructive and debilitating. This is a disgustingly stigmatizing article that needs to be immediately removed. The OCD community already experiences enough stigma as it is. We deserve better.
