Why this petition matters

Started by David Thomas

The newly installed protected bike lane on Oakdale Avenue is an extreme safety risk for a number of reasons:

The Pylons (delineators) are the problem, not the bike lane itself.

How are vehicles supposed to safely make room for fire trucks and ambulances? Especially considering that Oakdale is a major through way to different areas of the city and there is a fire station at one end of Oakdale.

How are street cleaners supposed to clear debris?

What if a car breaks down, where do they pull over?

The extra traffic concerns with garbage collection and buses now fully blocking traffic.

Then there is the risk to the cyclists. If their handlebar accidentally hit the pylon, they could be flung into traffic or hit the curb.

Then there is the massive waste of taxpayer dollars to remove them for winter, repair all the holes in the pavement that will lead to cracks and bad road conditions on a street that was recently paved.

This may be a good idea on a five lane road with multiple bike lanes on both sides, but not a narrow windy road.

And lastly, there is a bike trail running parallel to this section of Oakdale called the Terry Fox trail.

Please do the right thing and consider the terrible safety concerns you have forced on us.
