Why this petition matters

Started by Jordan Heaviland

EHallPass is an absolutely unnecessary change. The old system worked just fine. Did you know that not only your teacher sees your pass, but all staff do? Every time you exit your classroom, every single administrator in the school knows where you are.

The app also pings your teacher if you ‘take too long’. Who should get to dictate how long a bathroom break takes? It will also notify teachers if you take too many passes. Everyone’s body is different, some may need to leave more often. I’ve talked to many a student, and most feel pressured by the time limit. They can feel intimidated and likely wait until through the duration of the class. When this happens, they won’t be focused on their work, but rather counting down the ticking seconds.

EHP has another feature, ‘hallway traffic’. With this, it will restrict the amount of passes that can be out at a time. Why should I be restricted from going just because someone else is out? Then what’s the point of having more than one stall?

Really, the app is just completely unnecessary. It doesn’t make anything more efficient. 90% of the time, you still have to get your teachers attention so they can approve the pass. And if they’re not by their computer, that’s more time wasted.

I do understand some of the school’s perspective, though. They say some students are out in the halls in excessive amounts. Instead of adding a pointless change to the whole school, simply monitor those students. It’s not especially difficult to realize that Student A disappears for 30 minutes every time they go to their locker.

Some schools across the US claim that EHP has helped them identify struggling students. I see no way that EHP will assist that. An administrator should be able to tell if a student is struggling by taking a quick look at their grades. It’s not a grueling task.

Returning to my original point now. EHP is not illegal, against our rights, etc. However, it isn’t needed and is mostly an inconvenience. I’m sure many would agree. All us students ask is that we eliminate this change swiftly.
