Remove Crumb Rubber from Creekside Sports Park

Creekside Sports Park is a sports field that belongs to the Town of Los Gatos and is mainly used by local sports clubs like Los Gatos United. Kids of all ages between 5 and 18 use this field for practices and games and may exercise on the field up to 3 or 4 times a week.
The field was opened in 2012, using artificial turf and crumb rubber filling.
Artificial turf that uses infill made from recycled tires (“crumb rubber”) contains a cocktail of toxic chemicals, including benzothiazole, carbon black, and heavy metals, that have been linked to an increased risk of developing a specific type of blood cancer.
While the turf industry says it’s safe, we know that tires contain established carcinogens. If we considered only what tires are made of, we would think they should be classified as hazardous waste, as they are in some European countries, and definitely not used as a material our kids are exposed to on a regular basis.
In addition, field surface temperatures can reach as high as 200 degrees Fahrenheit due to the black nature of the filling. At these temperatures, even with athletic shoes on, children can get burned feet or suffer from heat stroke.

Please help us to convince the Town of Los Gatos to replace crumb rubber with a better alternative – for the health of our children. Thank you!
