Katie Smith started this petition to President Biden and

The Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness Program ("PSLF") offers great benefits to borrowers who pursue expensive degrees who want to work in public service jobs that pay less than jobs in the private sector. Unfortunately, the program contains requirements that force borrowers to remain in lower-paying jobs long after they have made their 120 requisite payments to achieve loan forgiveness. The program requires borrowers to remain in a qualified public service job for six additional months after applying for their final loan forgiveness after meeting their obligations while the loan servicer and then the Department of Education review their final application for forgiveness. This half-year addition to the ten-year work requirement prohibits borrowers from pursuing more gainful employment to better support their families in the meantime. Please eliminate the requirement that borrowers remain employed in qualified public service jobs pending final approval of their PSLF application, as these borrowers have already met their obligation to work in public service while making payments for ten years. Thank you.
