Across the country, the UK suffers with an estimate of 1.25m eating disorders (1 in 50) and will be likely to increase due to a new measure by the government put in place to ‘tackle’ obesity. They have announced that calories are to be put on 250+ large chain restaurants to help the decline in obesity crisis. What they don’t take into account is a number of ethical issues, eating disorders being one of them. The use of calorie counts won’t be effective in helping their cause of action but will further promote the growth of anxiety and worry amongst people suffer wing with eating disorders when going out for a meal, will promote the view of seeing food as a number and not a means of nutrition and nourishment and msg result in more people developing disordered eating habits with food - making them conscious of the calories consumed. Having calorie counts on menus will do far more damage than good (which could only be a small deal) and i urge everyone, suffering with an eating disorder or not to sign this to promote a healthier view of food and help ease the worry, stress and anxiety of people having to now face numbers in which they want to actively avoid knowing in the first place!
