Remove Bernie Sanders from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council

The Issue

As a rabbi and scholar dedicated to Holocaust memory, education, and Jewish moral responsibility, I believe that stewardship of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is a sacred trust. Preserving the historical truth of the Holocaust and transmitting its lessons to future generations requires integrity, accountability, and active engagement from those entrusted with this responsibility.

For this reason, I am deeply concerned about the continued membership of Senator Bernie Sanders on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council. Despite having held this position for approximately eighteen years, Senator Sanders has reportedly not attended a single Council meeting since 2007.

The role of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council is not symbolic or honorary. Its members are expected to participate regularly, contribute to oversight, and actively support the Museum’s mission of remembrance, education, and moral vigilance. Prolonged and complete non-participation undermines the effectiveness and credibility of the Council and diminishes the institution it is meant to serve.

At a time when Holocaust distortion and antisemitism are increasing globally, it is essential that those appointed to safeguard this legacy demonstrate consistent commitment. Long-term absence from Council responsibilities sends the wrong message to survivors, victims’ families, educators, and the public.

This petition is not motivated by partisanship, but by principle. We need Council members who are willing and able to fulfill their duties fully and responsibly.

I therefore urge the relevant appointing authorities to reconsider Senator Sanders’ position on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council and to ensure that all members actively uphold the sacred mission of Holocaust remembrance and education.

Please join me in safeguarding the integrity of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum by signing this petition.
