Recently I became aware of the Instagram page @vancouverjunkies which lives off of promoting the suffering of homeless people in the Vancouver Downtown East Side (DTES). The nature of this page is completely dehumanizing, especially when you consider that there are 15x as many deaths through overdose in BC than there are covid deaths. On top of that, posting about humans suffering drug addiction during such a political climate completely belittles the ongoing opioid crisis occurring in BC.

This page is built on the sole purpose of ridiculing the homeless, slandering them with names such as “slender meth”, “junkies aerobics”, “rat man”, “Chinatown crackchis”, etc in his captions.

Anybody who speaks against their page is either blocked or their profile is posted under a story highlight called “easily offended soft people”. They also have numerous highlights about how the “feminist army” is trying to attack and remove them and as a precautionary measure they’re now filtering their requests due to this.

Currently it’s unclear how calling out continual and habitual practices of dehumanizing the homeless in the downtown east side is any way feminist, but the fact that they believe this rly speaks to the type of people running this account.

As someone who has worked with the homeless in DTES, it’s clear that they would not consent to their images and videos being blasted on social media like this. The homeless are the most at risk group because they can’t even afford the simple luxury of having a roof over their heads. This account needs to be PERMANENTLY REMOVED. Please join me by signing this petition as an initial step towards this goal. Also, please consider reporting the account as well.

Thank you.
