Thane district municipal corporation (Maharashtra) has proposed and initiated construction of sewage treatment plant in right next to residential apartments at Parsik Nagar, Kalwa Thane. The land was reserved for Public parking and a Park about a year ago, but ambitious TMC officials have changed the plan without any public consent, neither communicated to affected stakeholders. The residents have complained to the municipal commissioner, the mayor and other politicians and authorities. But no action has been taken yet and their opposition for the project has fallen on deaf ears. Some of the highlights of this project. 1. As per norms and conditions of environmental department mentioned , Public consent should be taken before establishment of sewage treatment plant – in this case which is not taken. 2. The Basic STP site selection rule mentions, the proposed site should be atleast 500 meters away from any residential construction, The proposed site is within 50 meters of residential apartments. 3. If in any case public consent is not taken before establishment of STP , public awareness should be done in form of multimedia declaration on web, pamphlets distribution. – in this case its not done. 4. Any sanitary system should be at least 50 feet away from water reservoirs - here distance between water reservoir(pumping station of water which isupplies whole kalwa locality) and sanitary tank is less than 30 feet. 5. For excretion of end product which contain water should be disposed in river or sea shore- here seashore or creek is far away from project. In fact Thane municipal corporation authorized landscapes are available near creek which can be used for STP plant. When STP will start working water, air and noise pollution will take place, and approximately 1000 families in surrounding area have to suffer physical mental and environmental hazards. Hence this is our sincere request that this project should be shifted to remote area near creek where health issues will be minimal.
