Nabeel is co-founder of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights and a prominent leader of the pro-democracy movement in Bahrain. Arrested in May upon returning from a trip abroad, Rajab has been targeted by the Bahraini authorities as part of a larger campaign to criminalize non-violent protests. In total hundreds of protesters have been arrested or detained, including other prominent activists such as Zainab al-Khawaja and Said Yousif AlMuhafdah, while 13 opposition leaders remain imprisoned.
Despite statements by the Bahraini government in support of reconciliation following the recommendations of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI), Nabeel Rajab has been sentenced to 3 years over a tweet, and other human rights defenders continue to be targeted for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and association.
I strongly support the immediate release of Nabeel Rajab and all political prisoners in Bahrain as a path to reconciliation. We must keep pressure on the Bahraini government to take tangible steps that create peace and security in Bahrain.
