Release Mitchell Miller and Fire General Manager Don Sweeney

Release Mitchell Miller and Fire General Manager Don Sweeney
Why this petition matters
Today -- Friday, November 4th -- General Manager of the NHL's Boston Bruins announced the signing of 21-year-old USHL defenseman Mitchell Miller. It is well known throughout the hockey world that Miller has committed remorseless acts of bigoted, violent, racially-motivated bullying against his differently-abled classmate, Isaiah Meyers-Cruthers.
Though Miller pled guilty to charges of assault juvenile court when he was in 8th grade, according to Joni Meyers-Cruthers (the mother of his victim) Miller's virulent behavior continued well past his conviction, until as recently as two years ago. In a statement issued after his signing, Miller claimed to have apologized to both Isaiah and Joni Meyers-Cruthers. This seemingly fabricated claim was quickly refuted by the Meyers-Cruther family.
For more details about the nature of Miller's crimes visit this link to Boston.com's reporting on the subject. For the sake of this petition, important details are as follows:
- The specific incident that Miller pled guilty to in juvenile court was not an isolated incident of bullying. It was a hate-crime with racial motivations which was but one act of violence constituting a pattern.
- When Miller was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in 2021, he wrote a letter apologizing to every NHL franchise that might potentially draft him. He had not to this point in time, apologized to the Meyers-Cruthers family.
- As summarized in a statement by Joni Meyers-Cruthers linked here, "the magistrate [in Miller's juvenile court hearing] said it best: 'Mitchell, I don’t think you are remorseful for what you did more than you are upset for the negative attention you are getting.'"
As for Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney, when asked about Miller's past he demonstrated a staggering lack of respect for the Meyers-Cruther family, for the needs of the Bruins organization, and for the progress of the National Hockey League in general.
- When asked Sweeney revealed that he had not reached out to the Meyers-Cruthers family during internal discussion of the signing.
- In the same press conference Sweeney admitted multiple times that "this decision could be wrong."
- Sweeney later added if this was his own child, he's "not sure," if he'd be able to forgive Miller.
- According to Sweeney, when senior players amongst the Bruins leadership group were consulted about the signing, their response was "why do this?"
Sweeney has failed this organization, the fanbase of the Boston Bruins, and most importantly, Isaiah Meyers-Cruthers and his family. Moreover, much like Miller himself, he has shown no remorse whatsoever for his careless actions. In order for the Boston Bruins to even begin to make up for this mistake, they must hold Don Sweeney accountable by terminating him, as well Miller effective immediately.
