I am writing to humbly request that you take immediate action to release Joel Almeida-Gonzalez (A#: A097701844), Erik Almeida-Gonzalez (A#:A201102749), Alberto Vera-Ramirez (A#: A201102751), Carlos Tirado-Carmona (A#: A201102748), and Byron Tzoc Guarchaj (A#: A201102750) from detention.

Joel, Erik, Alberto, Carlos, and Byron are currently being held at Seneca County Jail in Tiffin, Ohio. These young men are very hard-working and honest people who live in New York City. They were detained en-route to Chicago where they were planning to perform their Aztec dancing. All of these men have families with children that need them, as well as an entire community who is pained by their detention.

All 5 men belong to two grounded Aztec dance groups in New York, Atl-Tlachinolli and Tletlpapalotzin. These groups have very essential yearly community performances this month through next month during this honored and culminating Day of the Dead season. Their performances have been held at well respected institutions such as the New York Public Library, the Museum of the American Indian, El Museo del Barrio, and the Queens Museum of Art.

These men are loved and respected in their communities and have worked to preserve the cultural tradition of millions in this country for more than 10 years each. They don’t deserve to be in a detention center and should be allowed to return back to their communities so they can continue to inspire older and younger generations alike.

In a recent announcement, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano stated new guidelines for Prosecutorial Discretion. According to these guidelines, all five men are not deemed a priority for removal by DHS and merit a favorable exercise of discretion.

I urge you to release Joel Almeida-Gonzalez (A#: A097701844), Erik Almeida-Gonzalez (A#:A201102749), Alberto Vera-Ramirez (A#: A201102751), Carlos Tirado-Carmona (A#: A201102748), and Byron Tzoc Guarchaj (A#: A201102750) from detention immediately.

Sincerely,
