S.M.A.R.T. lunch stands for students maximizing achievement, relationships & time and was put in place across high schools in Wake County in Raleigh, North Carolina.

For the 2021-22 school year, Wakefield High School made the choice to eliminate S.M.A.R.T. from the Wednesday school schedule. Some administration claimed that students were using S.M.A.R.T. lunch for it's full potential. However, some students, like myself, were. Many clubs, like the Best Buddies club, used S.M.A.R.T. lunch for club meetings. Many teachers, like my chemistry teacher, had an open classroom for students to make-up tests, retake tests, and receive extra help. S.M.A.R.T. lunch is an option to provide every student, especially those that don't have the option of staying after school, with a chance to participate in extracurriculars and receive help from teachers.

Some administration at Wakefield High School may argue that S.M.A.R.T. lunch wastes time throughout the school year. S.M.A.R.T. lunch is still offered at other Wake County Public High Schools, and those schools still have to offer the same classes and offer the same curriculum. Additionally, S.M.A.R.T. lunch is only on Wednesdays. On other week days, P.R.I.D.E. time was a shorter option for teacher help. The school still 'missed out' on thirty minutes or more of instructional per day. Furthermore, students used S.M.A.R.T. lunch for instructional purposes. Students had a chance to receive extra attention and participate in clubs. There is no reason S.M.A.R.T. lunch shouldn't be reinstituted at Wakefield High School.
