These individuals have honed their skills over decades, becoming masters of their craft. They possess knowledge and expertise that cannot simply be measured by a certificate or qualification, yet many have been forced to step away from our industry. The increasing demand for NVQ qualifications to obtain a CSCS card has resulted in these seasoned professionals being unceremoniously removed from their roles unless they choose to retrain or pay considerable fees. This is both unfair and detrimental to the future of the industry.
In 2024, it was reported that approximately 60,000 UK construction workers were faced with this predicament. Many of these workers have been in the industry for over 30 years. They are the backbone of our construction sites and hold valuable knowledge that is essential in training the next generation of construction workers. With the industry facing a significant skills gap, an estimated 100,000 young people are urgently needed to meet demand. The skills and experience these veteran workers could provide are invaluable in mentoring and training these newcomers.
Reinstating grandfather rights would allow these experienced tradespeople to continue their careers without the burden of costly retraining.
