Why this petition matters

Petition for clubs to be implemented back into personal learning time for the last 30 minutes of the school day:

We, the student body, need clubs during the school day to enrich our school community and to enrich our individual minds. Clubs add to students' experiences throughout elementary school, middle school, and high school. From students working alongside 6th graders in the Fall Festival, speaking to alumni, obtaining constructive criticism and feedback from peers, being involved in statewide competitions, and making connections with each other and the community: clubs play a vital role. As well as many students coming together in school spirit activities, honing communication skills, and making lasting impacts on the rest of their lives. Just ask an alum what their favorite part of their time at Freedom was, and what club made an impact on them.

Students have built these clubs from the ground up, and have run them during school for years on end. Taking away clubs during PLT will deter underclassmen who have never been involved in clubs as well as upperclassmen from staying after school. A majority of students have sports activities, work, other commitments, as well as siblings to take care of right after school. Many are not available, no matter if an activity bus is provided.

PLT—which is the last 30 minutes of the school day, also known as Personal Learning Time— is still able to be utilized as an academic devoted time, while also having clubs that enhance academic achievement. All students need clubs and activities for college applications, and they allow students to develop their character, branch out, and learn skills that will help them in school, college, and the future.

We impose the question: what is the education, social, and cultural benefit of taking away clubs during the school day, which will ultimately end clubs, to begin with?
