Sarah Y. started this petition to University of Central Florida University of Central Florida

As many of you may know, the University of Central Florida is one of the largest universities in the United States. It is very diverse, with students of nearly every cultural, religious or racial background imaginable. UCF is also home to many organizations that give students a means to unite with those who possess similar interests and ideas, or have had experiences parallel to their own. The ability of such organizations to coexist within one entity without infringing upon the peace, acceptance and sense of community on campus is one of the hallmarks of UCF life. However, there are a few groups of individuals that choose to invade our school with an aggressive, forceful, and overbearing nature, creating a sense of tension among students that ranges anywhere from slight annoyance to an induced state of anxiety or fear. The “Christian” extremists who picket on our campus cannot continue to use scare tactics and hostility to try to convince members of the UCF community to adopt their beliefs, as it is simply not right. There are a multitude of religious organizations, churches, temples, etc. who set up booths and tables at our school to attract prospective members while maintaining civility, friendliness and respect for everyone around them. Although they may approach students with flyers, pass out free stuff, or serve snacks, they do not operate with the same imperious, angry nature that these “missionaries” seem to believe to be effective. If you believe that UCF should limit the activities of non-student run organizations from coming to campus with external sound systems, giant signs, and scare tactics to harass young people simply trying to receive an education, I urge you to sign this petition. Freedom of speech and religion are two of the most valuable rights our country allows us to possess. However, it is unacceptable for the “free speech” of a few individuals to disrupt the learning environment and harmony of a university, or cause its students to feel unsafe in any capacity. Current state and UCF laws and regulations permit hate speech on campus and enable these threatening, disruptive people to come onto university grounds, spreading their bigotry and hostility to others. I personally will not stand for it. If you’re with me, please join me in signing this petition, and hopefully we can begin to build a case against the allowance of this intimidatory, disrespectful and hateful behavior towards students.
