Hands Off Wainscott Primary School started this petition to Dominic Herrington (Regional Schools Commissioner for South-East England and South London) and

We, the undersigned, call upon the Secretary of State for Education and Regional Schools Commissioner to revoke the academy order which will see our local school privatised and handed over to a multi-academy trust and request Ofsted re-inspect the school now.

We do not accept or want to see Wainscott Primary School handed over from the local authority to a multi-academy trust and do not believe that academisation and the removal of local democratic accountability will benefit our school.

We have serious concerns about Wainscott being forced to join a multi-academy trust because:

1.            Wainscott Primary School is a good school, outcomes and teaching and learning were judged so in the latest Ofsted report

2.            The issues surrounding safeguarding and SEND provision which resulting in the inadequate grading have been addressed by Governors and the school leadership team

3.            This conversion is being pushed through at a worrying speed. A September conversion will not allow time for a re-inspection of the school which staff and governors believe will demonstrate Wainscott is a good school

4.            After more than 10 years of the academy school project, there is no evidence that academies raise standards

5.            Evidence shows that schools that remain under council control improve faster than schools which convert to academy status

6.            Academy schools are free to employ unqualified teachers

7.            Wainscott is an inclusive school with students from a variety of backgrounds and we are concerned that an academy will “off roll” low achieving pupils to make results look better, as they are known to do

8.            Multi-academy trusts are less accountable to parents and the local community

9.            Academy schools do not receive any extra money

10.       Multi-academy trusts have been criticised for excessive salaries and expenses for CEOs, which diverts money away from the classroom

11.       Becoming an academy is a permanent decision that cannot be reversed

Staff and Governors at Wainscott Primary School have already taken all necessary steps to address the issues raised by Ofsted.

Wainscott can improve its Ofsted rating without being forced to join an unaccountable multi-academy trust, therefore we ask that the forced academisation process is halted immediately and the school is re-inspected.
