Nancy Diamond started this petition to Regional Municipality of Niagara Council and Voters and

In the 2018 general municipal election in Niagara, we -  the voting citizens - had the right to vote directly for the Regional Chair position. The Province took that right away.

The chair position was elected from within the council itself by the councillors elected.  So, if they were elected from one municipality within Niagara, it seems obvious they may have a bias towards that area and those voters who elected and will possibility re-elect them.

Niagara voters are aware of what happened with the former Chair and the resulting lawsuit against him and his fellow conspirators.  We, as voters in Niagara deserve the RIGHT to vote directly for the Regional Chair.

We now ask our current council to make this change for the 2022 and future elections.  They have the power to do this. They say we don't care. Show them we do.

The province completed its expensive governance review and decided to leave governance reform in the purview of each municipality. They have not released the findings of that review.

The Municipal Act provides a municipality the power to change the method of selecting its head of Council under section 218 of the Act for any regular election after 2018.

The upper tier municipalities of Durham Region, Halton Region, and Region of Waterloo directly elect their Regional Chair.

Upper tier and single-tier municipalities in Ontario with larger populations and/or geographic areas than Niagara have directly elected Heads of Council.

Niagara is a progressive municipality with diverse interests and all voting citizens of Niagara deserve to have a DIRECT say in who shall represent them as Regional Chair.

We want to vote directly for a Regional Chair who will represent all of Niagara Region.  We deserve nothing less.
