Keep Thunderbolt, Georgia Library Open

This September when students are all back in school, the Board of Trustees of the Public library will determine if Thunderbolt Library remains open. The library is in need of repairs, estimated at a cost of $200,000. If this can not be funded, Thunderbolt Library will close permanently. This library serves more than 200 people on the days it is open for longer hours. The new plan involves having Islands Library offer the only library services on the "east side" of Savannah. Closing Thunderbolt Library means that students at eastside schools like Savannah High and Hubert Middle, will increase the distance to a public library from one or two miles, to more than 8 miles. Older residents in Thunderbolt will have to travel across two bridges to access the nearest library. A library is critical to our city, having an informed citizenry, and for many people offering access to the Internet. Reliable  Internet access is crucial to finding work, learning, and the Board of Trustees under the direction of Dean L. Hortsman, Chair, should find ways to support this important resource, rather than shuttering a library.

Even if Thunderbolt isn't "your branch," library closures are not good for our community's well being. Please sign to petition the Board of Trustees to support Thunderbolt Library remaining open.
