The Nova Scotia Liberal government has decided to remodel employment services in Nova Scotia.  As part of this transformation, they’ve determined that specialized services for Women will no longer be funded in this province!

Women's Employment Outreach, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, will be closed as of June 30th, 2016 despite its 36 year history of providing exceptional services to Women.

Today’s labour market gives clear indication of the need for women-focused employment services. Women in Halifax earn 30% less than their male counterparts (Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives, 2015). In the next 4 years, Canadian women can expect to lose 5 jobs for every job gained, compared to 3 job losses per gain for men (World Economic Forum). Women continue to face discrimination and precarious employment, and 26.5% of women age 15 and older are employed part-time, compared to only 12% of men. With so many gender-specific barriers, women need – AND DESERVE – services that focus on them!

If WEO disappears, women who cannot access large, general employment centres for reasons such as safety, trauma, religion, and culture will no longer have access to employment supports at all. WEO’s 36 years of expertise will disappear and thriving community networks will fade away. If women’s specific needs are simply mixed in to mainstream services, women will lose.

Women’s Employment & Advocacy Society (WEO’s sponsoring organization) urges you to please sign this petition and let government know that women deserve services that meet their needs!

Women make up 51% of the population, and deserve government support through the continued funding of a long standing, low cost, financially responsible, community-entrenched organization. Let’s make sure that WEO can continue to provide exceptional service to women!
