Reforms in the Maternity bill for Adoption

The maternity bill passed in RS last year and LS today will need to be reformed to be more adoption friendly. First, a woman adopting a child should get the same benefit as a woman giving birth to a child-essentially 6 months paid maternity benefits. An adopted child will also take time to bond and requires adequate nursing; Second, CARA does not give a child less than 3 months. Therefore no women that is adopting a baby can avail the 12 weeks maternity leave benefit. The age will need to be extended to 12 months at least and the woman should still get 6 months leave as the adjustment time will probably be even more for the adopted child. Such reforms in the bill encourages adoption of children that need a home.
