Both child support and custody laws and statutes are undeniably biased to mothers, and understood so by all parents. In almost every state custody is immediately awarded to the mother upon separation, child support is granted to mothers with nothing more than a name and date of birth. Child support is one of the only cases that you dont have to be present for, for not only a debt to be put on you but to also be placed in jail. The only ones who find the systtem fair and just are the ones using it for self gain. The system doesn't care about the welfair of the child otherwise visitation would be considered in the same issue. Funds would be made available in a similar fashion as wic where each dollar is allocated for certain items. These things dont accure. Instead the father is handed a bill to pay and his legal rights end there. He has no rights to decisions in his childs life, nor education, religion, or even to be present in the childs life. The father is legally held liable to be nothing more than a piggy bank. And legally restricted to any other rights. This is a bias that needs reform nationally. Fathers around the country pay for years on children they dont get to see. They dont get to be a father. Mothers on the other hand get assistance with placing child support orders, some services such as food stamps or medicaid require the father to be on child support even if you have a good co parenting relationship. Incentives are even offered such as w.i.c. vouchers, child care vouchers, and other discounts just to put the father on support. This is a system that cripples the fathers ability to be a dad and adds to the crisis of absent fathers who run due to the penalties of said child support, which is often times much more than what is affordable. The current laws allow for upto 60% of wages can be garnished from the fathers, and for those living paycheck to paycheck that 60% makes them homeless. There are better alternatives, to enforce child support, and ways to make the support easier to handle and support should be married with visitation rights. If you are obligated to pay you should be obligated to visit. And those rights should be as easy for fathers to enforce as it is for mothers. Lets make it fair.
