Why this petition matters

Started by FM Pratt

I am a Transman, currently on Hormone Treatment of Testosterone. This I have had to obtain privately at a cost of between £50 and £84.00 because the NHS won't help me in my transition journey.  I have three diagnoses of Gender Dysphoria, (two NHS and one private) which should be adequate for my GP to prescribe the Hormone Treatment, but she won't because she insists I must go to a Gender Identity Clinic to be diagnosed and prescribed the hormone I need. I changed my GP and surgery last year and my new GP is far more Transfriendly. He says that I don't need to have another assessment as the original diagnoses still stand and GenderGP Diagnosis and Surgical Referral letter is sufficient. Try telling the London GIC that. I am stuck with the London GIC as I can't transfer to the Northampton GIC. The reason: They say I haven't got an updated Gender Dysphoria diagnosis (they claim they can't accept the GenderGP Diagnosis and Surgical Referral letter) and not had an Assessment since 2007. Since when did previous diagnoses - whether private or NHS - expire?

The NHS is Government backed and funded, yet cutting back on Services to Transgender people and creating long waiting lists and times - 3 to 5 years - because the Government can't or won't inject more money into the NHS to keep these Services running. This needs to change. The Government has the power to stop the NHS being in danger of going into oblivion, after over 70 years of operation. This is forcing people like me to seek private treatment, which is so unfair. The NHS needs to open more Gender Identity Clinics in order to meet current and future needs of Transgender people. Unfortunately, NHS England set impossible guidelines for GP's and restrict how much they can help Trans people eg prescribing Testosterone as a Bridging prescription. These guidelines have not been updated since 2013. The Integrated Care Board won't help me, and told me to contact Specialised Commissioning to complain. In the meantime, the ICB won't even grant me an Individual Funding Request or a Personal Health Budget because they claim I don't meet the criteria. This is just rubbish considering that I have Autism and need to be cared for by my partner. And the waiting lists/times should be a matter of months, not years.

If enough people support this petition, we can campaign for NHS reform and necessary changes to the system and make the Government listen. If it doesn't work, a deputation of supporters would be needed to take the case to the Parliamentary and Health Ombudsman in order to encourage the Government to reconsider the matter. If we lose, we will be no better off than we are now.
