Reducing Air Pollution in Ontario

Hello world! My name is Alex Melnbardis. Me and three of my school colleagues, Matthew Creally, Rowan Sullivan-Warr, and Caden Roberts are a group of grade 10 students at Mentor College Main Campus in Mississauga, Ontario. As part of our CHV203 Civics course, we have expressed interest in the global issue of environmental protection. More specifically, we are concerned about air pollution in Ontario. Our objective is to get more companies and industries to become in complete compliance with provincial environmental regulations for air pollution.

For reference, air pollution causes cardiovascular and respiratory health problems, affects birth outcomes, alters brain development, and is linked to cancer and chronic diseases, including diabetes. Every year in Toronto, over 1,300 people die and 3,500 are hospitalized due to air pollution mainly coming from industries. Industrial companies in Ontario are required to meet the air quality standards described in the Environmental Protection Act and Ontario Regulation 419/05. However, there are many companies that ignore these regulations or are legally allowed to emit far more harmful substances than usual, which reduces overall air quality, creates more health problems and diseases, and increases the intensity of global warming and the environmental disasters that it produces. One of my group members, Matthew Creally, lives near a large natural gas plant in his community. He and many other families are required to live a safe distance away from it to avoid being harmed by the gases and toxic fumes constantly being emitted. If something is not done to solve this problem, then more citizens and new generations of citizens will continually to be negatively impacted, and Ontario and the rest of Canada will only face more problems in the process of trying to combat the global climate change crisis. Our goal is to reach 200 signatures! Once the opportunity to support this petition has ended, it will be sent to the Provincial Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, Critic, Environment, and the Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change so that they are aware of the harm these companies are doing to local citizens, and so they take action on this issue. Thank you for your support!
