Reduce the 'Livable Streets Scheme' Closures in Tower Hamlets
Why this petition matters
We the residents and businesses in Tower Hamlets are in favour of opening the LTN roads that were closed by the previous administration. We believe these roads closures are causing more heavy traffic around deprived areas as traffic are getting diverted from these closures (mainly from the affluent area).
Richard Parnham, Head of Research at Reconnecting Oxford, said: “it is almost always the case that LTNs make pollution and traffic worse.
They are designed to push traffic onto boundary roads, and across the country the same thing happens. People with LTNs get quiet enclaves, but all traffic is displaced onto the boundary roads where other people live. Which is unfair" - Oxford Mail
The locals are suffering, the emergency services are having to spend extra time going round these closures responding to emergency situations. Analysis of data from London Fire Brigade showed firefighters had slowed response times 3,035 times last year and a fifth of fire engine delays happened because of traffic calming measures. This scheme is dividing communities, the poor are suffering more, businesses are losing trade as customers cannot access their premises more freely - deliveries for them becoming issues.
We are not against LTN we understand the importance of reducing traffic pollution for the future generations and our environment but sudden closures of roads without proper long consultation along with looking at the catastrophic consequences to locals is not the way forward.
This petition demonstrates the local people are not in favour of LTN road closures and we want these roads to be reopen. Other measures for now should be looked at in reducing pollution like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and other gasses while a full research and proper consultation with all concerned takes place.
Those that drive for work and groups with protected characteristics have seen access restrictions make their life harder. We need an alternative instead of rash decision on closing the roads to favour the more well off. Re open all roads then through proper consultation with all involved, investigation we can look at ways to reduce the pollution and not just by closing the roads.
