Reduce Light Pollution in Orem, Utah - Request for City Council to Update Light Ordinance

The Issue

Orem, Utah - We would like our Orem City Council and City Planning Commission to review the amount of light pollution we have in the city. We would like an update or creation of ordinance to reduce the amount of brightness that can be used by businesses after dusk. Not only would we be conserving energy, making it safer to see at night without flashing or ultra-bright lights, we might be able to see the stars again if we can reduce the amount of light pollution in our city,

We would also like our city administration to review the street lights and determine if there is a more pleasant and energy efficient way to light our streets without the ultra-bright LED lights which can cause headaches and night vision issues and which make it difficult to see.

As Orem continues to grow, and new businesses build here, we would like to make sure it's safe (well-lit at night) but also that we don't become Vegas as businesses begin to compete for attention with brighter and more flashy ads, signs, and lighting.

We need to get our ordinances in place, so new businesses can know how much wattage they can use, and what is expected to keep our city feeling like a hometown city and not an advertising competition. It will also help drivers be able to see those who are walking or riding bikes, as the LED lights sometimes make it difficult to see pedestrians.
