Ireland has reduced the time required to switch from stamp 1 (similar to tier 1 and tier2) to stamp 4 (similar to ILR) from 5 years to 2 years. We are hoping that the UK government would adopt the same and make it 3 instead of 5. The current immigration system is not giving the same opportunities for non EU doctors and it is hard for them to get on specialist training schemes and then apply for consultant posts. Many want to stay in UK and build their careers and raise their families here. Migrant doctors have long played a crucial role in NHS especially through the COVID pandemic and these changes go some way towards recognising that contribution.This change will also reduce the administrative burden to process visas and work permit and will help fill the shortages and gaps of the NHS doctors.
