We call on the Touro Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) administration to immediately reduce and permanently change the required field education hours from 1200 to 900 total hours for ALL Master of Social Work (MSW) students, in accordance with the Council of Social Work Education’s (CSWE) guidelines. Social workers have an ethical obligation to fight oppressive practices and requiring students to complete 300 additional hours of unpaid labor further marginalizes students already burdened with financial hardships. The CSWE has established that 900 hours of field experience is a sufficient amount of time for MSW students to master the required competencies, thus we assert that students should not be required to complete 300 additional hours. We implore the GSSW to eliminate this barrier which adds unnecessary stress and further perpetuates the oppression of students already juggling school, field experience, work, and/or family obligations.
