Why this petition matters

Started by Redding Families

To the Town of Redding's Board of Selectmen,

Last year, a playground at Topstone Park was removed due to age. The previous playground consisted of three structures, including a playscape for ages 2-5 years, a play car, and a play theater platform. The approximate footprint was 27’ x 40’. That space is currently empty.

More recently, Redding’s Park and Recreation Commission submitted a proposal for a replacement playground at Topstone Park, to be paid for using ARPA funds. This proposal was unanimously approved and recommended by both the Park and Recreation Commission and the BOS-appointed ARPA Committee. This proposal also recommended three structures including a playscape for ages 5-12, a climbing web structure for ages 2-5, and an ADA-compliant swing set. The approximate footprint of this playground is 27’ x 50’, plus a swing set (with multiple location options).

We believe that the Redding Board of Selectman should fully support and fund this playground build, using the proposed ARPA funds. We believe it is important that any play structure at Topstone be in line with the current aesthetic of the park, while prioritizing safety, accessibility, and craftsmanship. We also believe that vehicle access to Topstone park should be made more available in the shoulder seasons (March to May and September to November).

All Redding residents take pride in the value our town places on its open space, protected woodlands and vast network of hiking trails. An investment in Redding's only municipal park should never be interpreted as a deviation from these priorities. Strong communities are built on strong resident relationships. Topstone Park is one of Redding's few informal spaces for gathering and recreational play. We believe an investment in this space will only bolster resident's sense of community and pride in our town.
