Students of Nust started this petition to Rector NUST and

In 2018, National University of Science and Technology introduced laws that allowed all male students to smoke tobacco cigarettes in designated smoking areas on campus, while prohibiting all female students to enter these smoking areas.

It has been eleven months since these laws were introduced, and despite initial backlash from the student body and other groups, the administration did not act and waited for the criticism to subside.

The penalty for female students caught in these areas is a fine, and an additional call to the parents of the female student.

This is a deeply-rooted issue, and enforces the notion present on a broader level; women’s ghairat comes into question where society attempts to control women’s actions. It is the same notion that develops into graver crimes such as gender-targeted violence, honor killings etc. The immediate consequences on campus include female student subjugation, nonconstructive research and workplace environment and a diversion from focus on academics.

The students of NUST once more request the following demands:

  • Revoke policies that include a distinct ban of female students performing certain actions.
  • Use the same threats and penalties for all genders.
  • Address the issue on campus.

The following suggestions are to be noted:

  • Align campus policies in accordance with the constitution: Non-Smokers Health Ordinance 2002
  • Include a certain percentage of female policy makers in the policy making body.
