Help us celebrate the contributions of women in programming! We simply want World Book Encyclopedia to write and publish a good, informative entry on the first computer programmer. Augusta Ada Byron was born in 1815 to the poet Lord Byron and Anne Isabella Milbanke. While caring for her three young children, she brilliantly programmed Charles Babbage’s calculator to solve complex equations and even suggested larger potential for the machine, such as writing music and translating other languages. After her groundbreaking program was finished, she continued her work, writing a series of “Notes” that are now considered to be at the core of modern computer science. And years after her death, her program became legendary when it was used to create the software for the first modern silicon-based computer.
