Bring More Green Space to Western Soma

We have two objectives: to support the acquisition for 11th Street (between Minna & Natoma) already approved by Park Commissioners but still needing Board of Sup approval and also push for a second acquisition for Mission (between 7th & 8th).
11th Street was chosen as the first choice for open space acquisition because it is half an acre, close to the huge development coming to “The Hub” at Van Ness & Market. Half an acre would make a wonderful playground/recreation area…BUT, has leases that run til 2024 and are far from the families near 6th & 7th…Our families need parks NOW!
The R&P Open Space Acquisition Fund will be mostly used up for the 11th Street purchase, but we need to find the money from other sources to purchase the unused parcels on Mission before they are gone forever. There are massive Impact Fees coming in for this neighborhood. The parcels are actively marketed now and we need to secure them asap.
District 6 has been identified as the highest priority for park acquisition by Park & Rec because we have less open space per person than any other district and also the New Equity Metric developed by P&R supports poorer neighborhoods. We deserve more than just 11th Street.
