This could be happening to you or someone you know.

Wage theft includes underpayment of wages, unpaid superannuation, withholding entitlements, and "sham contracting" or wrongly classifying employees as independent contractors to avoid employer responsibilities.

Wage theft enables business practices to promote or attempt to hide wage theft.

There is a need for new wage theft laws to combat systematic, widespread or blatant under and non-payment of wages and other employment benefits and to ensure workers get fair pay and conditions.

Hold companies to account! Every day without these laws in place, is another day companies are skimming YOUR wages!

Personally, I have experienced Wage Theft by a monopoly energy company. I entered in to a contract for a set yearly remuneration. I received the one and only remuneration, without a payslip. I waited two days for a payslip to verify the amount. After two days, I sent the first email on the Friday, requesting the payslip that day. As I didn't receive even an acknowledgement, I sent a second email that same afternoon, to a different person in the organisation. I did not receive even an acknowledgement. I then sent a third (and more stern email) on the following Monday. I finally received my payslip. The figures did not add up! It showed that the Energy company had calculated my wages based on a lower rate than that as shown in the employment contract.

It can be perceived that the company had initially withheld the payslip, and avoiding acknowledgement or receipt of my emails, thereby deliberately hoping to avoid detection.

In addition to immediate legislative implementation of Wage Theft Laws, I call for an independent audit of the company's payroll and their practices.
