Rename sites at University of Wisconsin-Madison named after Ku Klux Klan members

The Chancellor appointed a committee to review the history of student Ku Klux Klan organizations in the early 1900s, on the UW Madison campus, following the violence in Charlottesville. The report was released on April 19 and two prominent sites, the Frederic March Play Circle, and Porter Butts Gallery in Memorial Union, were identified as namesakes of KKK members.

The report identified significant campus diversity initiatives as remedies to the wrongs of the past. This petition is being circulated to emphasize that the campus diversity initiatives along with renaming the prominent sites should occur in tandem and the sites not identified in the report, should also be renamed. The KKK groups were allowed/supported by the UW-Madison administration at that time and their mere presence on campus was both threatening and intimidating to students of color. A prompt, holistic remedy is in order.
