Why is Sexual Assault not condemned in the RUSU Activity Guidelines?

Throughout their time at university, students of all genders often experience sexual assault and harassment, whether it be by being groped or something much worse. This is sometimes as a result of initations and society ‘challenges’ on nights out.
At the moment this is not recognised in the RUSU Activity Guidelines or mentioned in the specific paragraph about initations: https://www.rusu.co.uk/pageassets/organisation/templates/default/Constitution-and-Behavioural-Policy-Student-Activities-2017-18.pdf
This needs to change.
By signing this petition, we can encourage RUSU to re-evaluate the way they acknowledge sexual assault on campus. This will give victims more confidence to come forward, in the knowledge that this behaviour is not tolerated by RUSU or the Activities Team.
This petition asks that:
- RUSU include sexual assault as an issue in a separate clause within the Activity Guidelines.
- Within the ‘Initiations’ section, sexual assault is recorded and will be considered a Breach of Behavioural Policy that could result in a ban and more serious action.
Sexual assault is a serious issue and should be treated as such.
