On February 2, 2011, constitutional scholar and civil rights attorney, Judith Berkan, wrote a powerful open letter to US Senator Charles Schumer, questioning his (and his colleagues') complicit silence in the face of grave civil rights violations in Puerto Rico, a colony of the United States. While President Obama recently reiterated that the United States “supports the democratic aspirations of all people”, and while political elites witness democratic struggles around the world with a mix of consternation and hope, current indifference to these horrendous affairs in a US territory rings oddly hypocritical, to say the least. This petition asks Senator Schumer to, at a minimum, read Berkan's letter and assume a leadership role in this matter. Read the Berkan Leter HERE.
