Having a place on campus where students and staff can enjoy a responsible drink, a couple of snacks, and a good conversation is fundamental to the university community. Currently, students and staff must leave the campus and make use of profit-driven pubs with no connection to Swinburne culture.

Before 2006, the Union Bar on the Hawthorn Campus was a fully-functioning student bar. The space still exists, but is used only as a lounge area, except when the Student Union applies for limited, one-off licences to host events. The Student Union is fast running out of its annual allocation of these licences, and the bar will go back to disuse, with staff and students leaving the campus to find their culture elsewhere.

At any given university in Australia, you can find staff and students enjoying a beer and having a yarn about Things That Matter - but not at Swinburne University.

Over the past two years, the Student Union has run many events which have been well received by staff and students, well attended, and with no bad behaviour of any sort. The Student Union maintains a good relationship with Victoria Police, Swinburne Security, and Facilities and Services, and has proven itself to be a responsible licensee.

The time for Swinburne University to endorse this fundamental part of university life is now, and, with the support of Swinburne University staff, this once-integral part of uni culture will once again be a reality. Send your support to the Swinburne Student Union today!

Letter to
Hawthorn Campus Chair - Swinburne Student Union Swinburne Facilities and Services Department via the Swinburne Student Union
As a staff member of Swinburne University, I am in full support of your petition to allow SSU to re-open the Union Bar as a fully-licensed venue in academic periods, and I empower you to forward the following message to Swinburne Facilities and Services on my behalf.

----------------
Please allow the Swinburne Student Union to open the lounge/bar in UN Level 3 and operate it as a fully-licenced venue between the hours of 12pm and 12am every day during academic periods.
