It is time to act! It is time to PUSH FOR PROTECTION!

Since 2013, more than 300 school shootings have occurred in America.  That is nearly 1 school shooting per week inside our schools.  I will say it again:  Since 2013, more than 300 school shootings have occurred in the United States.  The majority of these shootings have occurred inside high school buildings.  It is a scary thought that as the days go on, the odds of us becoming a statistic are rapidly increasing.

Our children are living in fear from 7:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m. while inside their own school.  Derby High School is supposed to be their safe haven, a place to learn and enjoy their formative years.  These school shootings must stop!

Reports have shown that School Resource Officers (SRO) CAN and DO make a difference.  When the difference they make is preserving life, and keeping our children alive, it is curious to think why we do not already have an SRO in place.  We are all very aware that everything comes with a price, and our tax dollars are already stretched thin, but there is no price that we as a community could ever put on our children.

While throughout the country schools have planned inside and out, they have secured their doors and locks, increased their codes and entrance procedures, guns are still getting in. Children are still dying. Our focus must now turn to the response inside the building.  We must focus on the response once a gun has entered the building, once the shots are being fired.  We as parents and a community must PUSH FOR PROTECTION by adding an SRO into Derby High School.  National statistics are repeatedly proving that the quick response by officers already on the inside are saving lives … our children’s lives.  It is time for an SRO at Derby High School.

Please join me in the PUSH FOR PROTECTION. Sign this petition so that our Mayor Richard Dzeikan knows we want action.  We as a community, we as parents, need to be able to tell our children we are doing all we can to keep them safe, because in reality, right now we are not.  There IS more we can do, so we owe it to them.  Mayor Dzeikan’s mission statement to the community states “To be proactive, rather reactive whenever possible.”  It is time to be proactive before our community and kids become part of a statistic. Please join me in signing this petition so that Derby Police Chief Gerry Narowski hears our voice and our PUSH FOR PROTECTION.  Please join me in signing this petition so that our Tax Board knows we as a community, we as TAXPAYERS are PUSHING FOR PROTECTION and want an SRO inside Derby High School.  We NEED an SRO.  Our children’s lives may one day depend on an SRO inside Derby High School.  Join me in the PUSH for the little protection we can give our kids while they are in school each day.

Nearly 100 years ago, Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States said, “Children are our most precious natural resource.”  President Hoover’s quote is as prevalent today, if not more so, than ever before.
