The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons is world renowned for the excellent record it has in producing world class Veterinarians.

While dogs, cats and small pets are well catered for at most veterinary surgeries, sadly only a few are specialised in the care and surgery of reptiles, such as snakes and bearded dragons, and bird care.

Given the boom in popularity of animals such as bearded dragons in recent years, many people are buying them only to find there is no vet nearby who is specialized to deal with their bird or reptile, when a vet is needed. This means countless animals and birds aren't able to receive the specialized treatment they need and deserve, often resulting in death of the pet in question.

We would like to call on the RCVS to update their curriculum, to include a thorough and specialist course of knowledge of reptiles and birds for every student, to ensure every single vet graduates with a thorough and dependable skillset regarding these animals so that every veterinary practice in the country is able to provide the specialist care and treatment every bird and reptile deserves.

Many thanks.
