Caste based reservation is like Cancer; It’s time to Eradicate! Merit based admission; Money & Aid for the poor to Educate!

"Destroying any nation does not require atomic bombs or the missiles. It only requires lowering the quality of education and allowing cheating in the examinations by the students. Patients die at the hands of such doctors; Buildings collapse at the hands of such engineers; Money is lost in the hands of such economists & accountants; Humanity dies at the hands of such religious scholars; Justice is lost at the hands of such judges... The collapse of education is the collapse of a nation" – Nelson Mandela.

For a country that aims to be a global growth hub, the latest Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) for rural India is shocking! The survey carried out in 28 districts across 24 states paints a sorry picture. The 14-18yr old students, first batch to pass Class VIII after the implementation of ‘Right to Education’ Act, performed poorly - one-fourth were unable to read their own language fluently, 57% of them struggled to solve a simple sum of division, 14% couldn’t identify the map of India and 36% couldn’t name our capital.

Ambedkar was an early votary of reservations in education for the SC/ST for a short period, definitely not for 70 years. It encouraged vote bank politics. He is unlikely to have backed the creamy layers of Dalits and OBCs to continue cornering the benefits of reservations endlessly. In fact, he was in favor of annihilating caste, not perpetuating it. By making caste reservations permanent, we have created a permanent vested interest in caste consciousness.

In 1979 Mandal Commission was established to assess the situation of the socially and educationally backward classes. The Commission used 1930 census data classifying 1,257 communities as backward and put the OBC population at 52%. It increased the existing quotas from 22% to 49.5%. As of 2006, the number of castes in OBC went up to 2297! ‘Divide and Rule’ policy of our short-sighted, self-serving Netas at work! Schools are being operated as personal fiefdom or as a business. Teachers in the government schools are well paid but lack accountability. Most of the private schools/colleges are owned by the corrupt Netas who don't care whether students study or not.

Our school education suffers from systemic failure and has serious repercussions for our economy and society. With more than a million joining the workforce every month, poor education standards mean that many of them won’t be employable. That in turn could see unemployed youth channel their energies towards destructive ends, turning our demographic dividend into a ticking time bomb. ‘Make in India’ initiative will remain as a slogan! The solutions include - hiring teachers on merit and not on reservation basis (caste and religion), rigorous mapping of learning outcomes and rewards for the best teachers and schools, skill training and accountability for the staff & management, and penalties for those that don’t perform.

Under “Fundamental Rights,” the Constitution prohibits any discrimination based on religion, race, caste, sex, and place of birth (Article 15 [1]). Reservations contradict our Fundamental Rights. India’s caste system is at odds with the ideals of equality and social justice. If you look at any society or nation, merit-based policy makes the nation move forward and prosperous.
